Rural health centers across Kenya and Tanzania face a severe shortage of medical specialists. Patients often travel hours to reach urban hospitals for consultations that could be handled remotely. Working with the Ministry of Health, we deployed a telemedicine platform that connects rural facilities to specialist doctors, enabling remote consultations and AI-assisted triage.
The platform works on low-bandwidth connections and includes offline capabilities, making it practical for the challenging infrastructure environment of rural East Africa. Integrated AI tools help community health workers conduct initial assessments and prioritize urgent cases.
Rural health facilities lacked access to specialists, leading to unnecessary patient travel, delayed diagnoses, and poor health outcomes.
Fewer than 1 specialist per 100,000 people in rural areas
Patients traveling 4+ hours for specialist consultations
High rate of unnecessary referrals overwhelming urban hospitals
Delayed diagnosis of critical conditions
Limited diagnostic capabilities at primary care level
Unreliable internet connectivity at rural facilities
