AI systems deployed in Africa must work fairly across diverse populations, languages, and contexts. They must be transparent enough to earn trust and accountable enough to correct mistakes. This is the focus of our Responsible AI research.
We develop frameworks, tools, and best practices for building AI systems that are fair, explainable, and aligned with African values and regulatory requirements. Our work spans the full ML lifecycle, from data collection to model deployment and monitoring.
We also engage with policymakers, civil society, and industry to shape responsible AI governance across the continent.
Understanding the unique obstacles we're working to overcome.
AI models can perpetuate or amplify biases against marginalized groups if not carefully designed and tested.
Users and regulators need to understand how AI systems make decisions, especially in high-stakes domains.
Collecting data for AI development must respect user privacy and comply with evolving data protection laws.
When AI systems make mistakes, there must be clear processes for redress and correction.
The methods and techniques we've developed to address these challenges.
Comprehensive testing tools that evaluate model performance across demographic groups before deployment.
Techniques for generating human-understandable explanations for model decisions.
Federated learning and differential privacy approaches that protect user data during model training.
Organizational policies and processes for responsible AI development and deployment.
Measurable outcomes from our research and deployments.
